Navini Island at sunset, painted from our photos
Navini Island, Fiji

11 November 2010

We got married at sunset on this island.

Here’s the short version of everything since. It starts a bit earlier.

2002

How It Started

Me in Year 12. You in Year 11.
Most mornings before school, I’d find a way to annoy you.
One morning I threw the ball at you, ran over to get it back,
and kissed you on the cheek.

Navini, at sunset.

Photos make good line drawings.
Remember that for later.

How We Designed It

It started with this photo, walking back along the beach after the ceremony.

We redrew it as a single line drawing.

Then Navini from above, with the real reef around the island.

We traced that reef into a border.

Then we brought the two together.

Underneath, our initials and the day we got married.

And the coordinates of Navini, the tiny island where we said yes.

Engraved into the aluminium, so it outlasts the wax. The jar is refillable.
